Why I Do It

--editorial by Grant Carson, editor Big D Bulletin

I spend from 10 to 20 hours a month producing the chapter bulletin. Think of what you can do in 10 to 20 hours a month!

If you spent the time rehearsing the chapter music with your tapes, you would know every word and note of every song in the repertoire! If you are a chapter leader and spent this time working on the tasks involved in your leadership position, you would have your responsibilities well in hand, the chapter moving forward.

That’s a lot of time, but I don’t begrudge it. I’m amply rewarded when one of you says, “Good bulletin!” I love it when I get letters from members no longer able to participate or those who’ve moved away but still love the chapter. I feel a sense of duty done that division and district officers know by the bulletin that we are still here, doing our thing, having fun.

Every time a new issue is published I feel gratification that those deserving recognition have been recognized, and that chapter events have been published for all who were there, for remembrances, and for all who weren’t there to enjoy vicariously. I like recognizing birthdays. I like recording the history of the chapter. I like giving a forum to the chapter leadership to tell the members the plans they have, and especially the congratulations on things well done. I like giving the opportunity for any member to speak his piece, and I’m happy that some do. I feel duty done when I’ve informed the chapter of coming events--where to go at what time in what uniform, and what other interesting barbershop activities are available. I feel I’ve done a service to the chapter when I’ve collected international, district and

division news into a convenient package. I enjoy telling about service activities, so that everyone can be proud of the chapter’s contributions. I enjoy telling about quartet activities. I especially enjoy doing research about the songs we sing. After all, they are really great songs!

If ever you’ve wondered about why I do it, I do it because I enjoy it and think it important. There are many talents in the chapter members. This is my particular talent to give to the chapter.
